Vietnam is known for its diverse climates. March is a particularly interesting month because it marks the transition between seasons in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. While the two cities share a common national identity, their weather in March can be very different.

Hanoi: Mouldy March with a sprinkle of sun
In March, Hanoi experiences the peak of its spring season. The weather is generally mild, but a little unpredictable. You can feel freezing one day and warm the next. The temperatures range from around 14°C to 27°C. While some days can be sunny and pleasant, the nights can get a bit chilly. Spring can be a lovely time with flowers starting to bloom and trees becoming greener. But don’t put your jackets and winter clothes away just yet.
Mouldy March
Humidity levels in Hanoi start to rise as the month progresses. With humidity comes mould. Mould is an issue in Hanoi due to its high humidity that creates an endless damp environment. March is particularly bad for this, giving rise to the name Mouldy March. We have lived in homes where walls have gone from white to black, clothes were covered in spores, and mushrooms grew from indoor plant pots. It is an inevitable part of life here, but there are ways to help control it. Investing in dehumidifiers is a start. Put moisture absorbers in closets and silica bags in shoes and bins. Aircons have a dry mode and fans left running can help. Vinegar and tea tree oil is a natural way to remove spores that may pop up. The more prepared you are the less likely extreme growth will happen.
Pollution
Pollution in March can be unpredictable. A deep grey smoggy cloud often gets stuck in our valley and you may go days, even weeks, without seeing the sun or a blue sky. Checking the AQI (Air quality index) regularly is advised. Download the IQAir AirVisual app. We highly recommend purchasing air purifiers for your home. A PM20 face mask with filters is good to have to wear on high AQI days. Don’t worry though, it will lift eventually and you will see the true beauty of Hanoi once again.
Ho Chi Minh City: Warm and Tropical
In contrast, Ho Chi Minh City in the south enjoys a completely different climate in March. Ho Chi Minh City is located in the tropical zone, so its weather tends to be hot and humid year-round. March falls right in the middle of the dry season, which runs from December to April. The temperature during this month typically ranges from 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F), with high humidity levels that can make it feel even warmer. You’ll likely look at Saigonese who shield themselves from the sun using head-to-toe coverings (+ gloves!).
The dry season in Ho Chi Minh City is characterized by clear, sunny days, with very little rainfall. March in Ho Chi Minh City is a time when residents and visitors enjoy the city’s outdoor cafes, vibrant street food scene, and lush parks without the interruptions of rain. The nights, however, can be more comfortable, with temperatures dropping slightly.
Tips for Travelers
- Hanoi: If you’re planning to visit Hanoi in March, pack layers. A light jacket for the mornings and evenings will be essential, and you may want to carry an umbrella just in case of a brief rain shower. Be sure to explore Hanoi’s parks and lakes—Hoan Kiem Lake and West Lake are beautiful in spring.
- Ho Chi Minh City: For Ho Chi Minh City, bring light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and a hat. The heat can be intense, so stay hydrated and take breaks in air-conditioned cafes or restaurants. March is a great time to explore the city’s vibrant street life, from scooter-filled streets to riverside eateries.
March provides a wonderful opportunity to experience two different sides of Vietnam’s climate. Whether it’s the Hanoi Spring or Ho Chi Minh’s warmer weather, you’ll be able to experience Vietnam without being way too hot or way too cold.
