A Vietnamese Weddings isn’t just about two people getting married.

It’s about families meeting, traditions being honored, and an entire room coming together to celebrate something bigger than just the couple.

So if you’ve ever been invited to a wedding in Vietnam, or you’re just curious what they’re like, here’s everything you need to know 👇

Vietnamese Wedding

It’s not just one day, it’s a whole journey!

Vietnamese weddings don’t just happen in a day, they unfold over a series of meaningful ceremonies.

Before the big party, there are two important steps:

  • Lễ dạm ngõ → the first official meeting between both families
  • Đám hỏi → the engagement ceremony (and honestly, it already feels like a wedding)

These moments are all about family approval, respect, and setting the foundation for the marriage.

It’s not just about the couple, it’s about two families coming together.

The Red Trays You’ll Definitely Notice

One of the most iconic visuals? Red trays stacked with gifts.

During the engagement ceremony, the groom’s family arrives at the bride’s house carrying these trays, filled with:

  • Fruits
  • Traditional cakes
  • Tea & alcohol

Each item symbolizes blessings like happiness, prosperity, and a sweet future together. And more importantly:

The act of bringing these trays is a formal way of showing respect and asking for the bride’s hand in marriage.

Meet the “Phù Dâu – Phù Rể”

You’ll notice a group of well-dressed young people on both sides – and no, they’re not just there for photos.

These are the “phù dâu – phù rể” (bridesmaids & groomsmen), and they play a real role.

  • The groom’s side has phù rể → they carry and present the trays
  • The bride’s side has phù dâu → they receive the trays and support the bride

After everything’s done?

They even receive a small envelope as a thank-you from the couple.

Outfit Changes Are Part of the Experience

Vietnamese weddings come with multiple outfit moments, and we’re here for it.

Traditionally, the couple wears áo dài during the daytime ceremonies – elegant, symbolic, and deeply cultural.

Later at the banquet?

It’s common to switch to Western-style wedding attire. It’s a blend of tradition and modern celebration, and it works beautifully.

The Wedding Banquet is a Pure Energy

If you’re invited to a Vietnamese wedding, this is the part you’ll remember.

The banquet is big, loud, and full of life.

  • Hundreds of guests
  • Endless food (seriously, it keeps coming)
  • Beer, toasts, and constant “một, hai, ba, dô!”

And yes – singing and dancing are a must!

Attending as a Guest: What You Should Know

First time at a Vietnamese wedding? Here are a few things to keep in mind:

✔ Dress Smart

Avoid wearing all white or all black. Why?

White and black are traditionally linked to mourning, so weddings lean toward brighter, happier colors.

Also… Let the bride have her moment 😉

✔ Bring Wedding Gift

Wedding gifts in Vietnam are simple, but meaningful.

Most guests will bring: Cash in an envelope.

If you’re closer to the couple? Gifts can be more personal, sometimes even gold!

And Sometimes… It’s on a Boat

Vietnam loves to keep things interesting.

In the Mekong region, weddings are sometimes held on boats.

Yes – floating celebrations, riverside vibes, and a completely different atmosphere.

It’s still the same traditions, just with a more local, unforgettable twist.

So… Would You Go to One?

If you ever get the chance, say yes!

Come for the culture, stay for the food,
and leave with a story you’ll probably tell more than once.

Because a Vietnamese wedding isn’t just an event, it’s an experience.
